The Loudoun Free Clinic, the sole project of the Catoctin
Foundation (formed in 1998), serves those uninsured
residents of Loudoun County with limited incomes. The
LCFC is a private, not-for-profit organization and has been
in continuous operation since last opening on January 10,
2002. Doctors see patients every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Other clinicians see patient’s additional days. The specialty
clinics include diabetic, hypertension, asthma as well as
acute care. Staffing for the Clinic is provided entirely
by a dedicated corps of 100+ volunteers from the medical
community and the community-at-large. Each clinic requires
an average of 10 volunteers from physicians and nurse practitioners,
nurses, pharmacists, interpreters and administrative staff.
Since 2002 we have grown from being open once weekly to
full time. For fiscal year ending 2006, we had three specialty
clinics weekly and saw in excess of 3,500 patient visits.
While there is a paid staff of five, volunteers gave over
1,582 individual efforts and donated over 3,600 hours of
their time. The Loudoun Free Clinic operates in dedicated
space of about 2,800 square feet. Our space, including utilities,
housekeeping and phone service are donated by Inova Loudoun
Hospital. It is truly a community effort; many individuals
and business whose donations range from dinners, gardening,
furniture to medical equipment and much, much more.
Loudoun Free Clinic patients receive quality health care services for acute and
chronic illnesses. Medications, laboratory tests and diagnostic
imaging services are provided free of charge to the patient.
Referrals to specialists are provided free of charge through
a network of specialists who also volunteer their time. We
provide education and specialized classes as well. Imaging
services are provided through in-kind donations from Reston
Hospital, Reston Radiology Associates, MRI of Reston, Fairfax
Radiology, Washington Radiology and Radiology Imaging Associates.
Lab services are provided through an in-kind donation from
Quest Laboraties.
Providing medications to our patients is one of our highest budget items we must
cover. In the last 12 months, we have spent $185,000 on medications
for our patients.
For every $1 the clinic spends, it delivers $5.00 in health care.
For year ending 6/30/06 we delivered $4.85 million in health
care services to the residents of Loudoun County.
This is up from $3.2 million in services the previous year.
As the demand has increased so, too, goes the types of services required. We have
continued to expand our services to the uninsured of Loudoun
County. Such expansion certainly requires more avenues of
funding and brings with it the need for more staffing — both
volunteer, and paid.
We have benefited from monetary support from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors,
The Town of Leesburg, and The Town of Hamilton. Inova Loudoun
Hospital, Reston Hospital Center, Anthem BC/BS and State of
Virginia, grants, local churches, civic organizations, businesses,
foundations, as well as private citizens. We hold two special
events yearly to raise money & awareness. We look to partner
with the community on a continuing basis. We continue to cultivate
and grow these relationships and to broaden our funding base
through the identification of other avenues of support.
The needs of our patients should be our guide in determining expansion
of services. The reality, however, is that funding will be
the determining factor. At the end of the day, the kinds and
extent of the services we can provide is directly attributable
to the available funding.
